THE OCEAN OF ICE

SS25

This project began with a dive into observing the beauty of ice found in the landscape of Glen Coe. The contrast between the chaotic movement of water being jolted by the static immoveable nature of ice. The same material, in the same location, with opposing qualities. The act of ‘freezing’ can be likened to one being ‘stopped in your tracks’ - you can no longer move, you remain stationary. This is until you are melted, and the chaos ensues once again like crashing water. Translating this concept of stationary vs movement, Musson looked towards how she could change the nature of a specific material – paper - from being rigid to soft. When combining paper with oil the qualities of the paper change and it softens to become more like fabric. This project further took inspiration from historical portraits. The silhouettes of the historical garments and the lace adornments found its way into my project as a way of connecting the past with the present. The silver lining was the final topic that Musson drew a lot of inspiration from. The concept of hope being written in the clouds seemed beautiful, and fitted perfectly with an interest in other forms of nature.

BEHIND THE PROJECT

This collection is made from 80 paintings sewn together. The process began with photography of ice taken in the beautiful landscape of Glen Coe. Musson responded to these by working with watercolour, ink and salt to replicate the qualities of water and ice. The paintings that were done on Japanese paper were then treated with oil and kneaded by hand to soften the fibres so that the paper became fabric like. The paintings were then sewn together to make the coat and shirt of this collection.
